Exact Golf Tips
As weekend golfers lets face it our
swing is never re
ally perfect, nor is it repeatable. Even worse while
these issues don't surface with every shot we don't know what the
cause is or when it will show it's ugly head. Not all is lost though,
there is some good news. This article will present you with 5
observations and tips about the golf swing that you can implement
next time at the driving range and see if you gain more consistency
and control over your swing. The information in this article will
give you a great primer on basic golf swing tips, for more detailed
information there will be a link at the bottom of this article where
you can receive our free video golf tips.
Review your Golf Grip
Before I get into this first point, I'm
not suggesting that anyone is gripping the club incorrectly. If
you're unsure if you are then it's probably best that you take a
moment and review the basic golf club grips of interlocking,
overlapping, and baseball grip. I'm going to assume that you've
settled on a grip that is comfortable to you. What we want to
concentrate on is the position of your hands and the pressure you're
applying to the club when you swing. To many of us grip the golf club
with the vulcan death grip, this causes nothing but troubles. Next
time out think as if you're holding something delicate, you want to
hold on not to tight as it's fragile, but strong enough so that you
have control. If you're used to gripping the club really tight this
might seem a little uncomfortable to you at first but trust me the
club won't go flying across the practice range, and you'll get used
to it.
Now the second part is your hand
position. Most of us grab a club, pick the grip we feel comfortable
and we're off to the first tee box. Very little time if any is spent
thinking about where our hands are positioned on the golf grip. If
you're struggling with a golf slice then pay close attention to this
next tip. Grip your driver as you normally would, approach the ball
and look down at your left hand (right hand if your a lefty). How
many knuckles can you see on your hand? If you can't see three then
turn your hand back towards yourself until you can see three knuckles
on your top hand. What does this do? It creates a stronger grip that
will help close the club face faster in your down swing and ensure
that the club face is square to the ball at impact.
Weight shift and
distribution
All golfers who have a repeatable swing
have got the concept of weight distribution down pact. Here's a quick
overview. Standing with your feet about shoulder width apart you
should have even weight distribution of 50/50 on your front and back
feet. As you bring the club back for your back swing you should move
your weight to the inside of your back foot making for a 75/25 weight
distribution. Now this is where the power comes from, as you bring
the club down you transfer your weight to your front foot, but there
is a common mistake many amateur golfers make at this point that
ruins the shot. We begin to lean forwards with our front hip, almost
curing our selves. Rather then doing this transfer the weight to your
front foot, turn your leading up back wards away from the ball, so
that when you've completed your swing your belt buckle is aiming
towards the target.
Aiming your shots
When we start golfing someone always
tells us to lay a club down in front of our feet and then walk away
to see where we're aiming. Most times we're aimed either left or
right of the target rarely right on. This is a tip that since I've
heard it have used probably 90% of my shots since. The times I didn't
use it I can assure you I was off target. It's difficult when we're
addressing the ball to square ourselves up correctly to aim at
something that's 100 yards, 200 yards, or even further away. There's
a quick and easy way to fix this. Stand behind your ball before you
get ready to make your shot, select something either in the tee box,
on the fairway or the green that is in line with where you want to
aim your shot. Keep that spot in sight and approach the ball, now
rather then aiming at the target 150 yards away aim at the spot you
chose that was in line with the target. This means you're line is in
vision when you're addressing the ball and you can better concentrate
on the shot.
Your posture and head
movement
A big trouble some beginner golfers
have is the lifting motion either in their back or head that causes
them to continually top the ball. It's very frustrating, and often
the harder they try to correct it the worse it gets. So an easy thing
to work on next time at the driving range is use your spine as an
axis for your swing. With your knees slightly bent bend at the hips
so your leaning forwards over the ball ever so slightly. Through the
back swing you should keep this same height, through the down swing
the same height, and not until you've made contact with the ball will
you begin to straighten out and bring the club through. Practice this
and you'll enjoy more consistency with your shots.
Just a quick note that goes hand and
hand with the above tip is to understand that keeping your head down
is important when swinging back and making impact with the ball. How
ever as you follow through and straighten out your body your head
should come up as well. Also be sure not to over exaggerate keeping
your head down, having your head down to low causes your chin to be
in the way of your shoulders rotating and will cause other ill
effects in your swing.
Golf Swing Speed
Now this one you've also likely heard
before possibly during the same round someone told you to keep your
head down. It's the old saying 'slow it down'. This isn't something
that just amateur golfers struggle with, we all try to swing at the
ball a little to hard sometimes. The thing is if we have trouble
being consistent when we're swinging slower, what makes us think
we'll do better when we swing harder? Exactly, we won't!
Next time you're at the driving range
slow your swing down. Grab a long iron or wood and swing at 50-75% of
your normal swing speed, don't worry how far the ball goes but notice
the consistency you have with the shots. There are a lot of things
going on during the golf swing, and if you try to murder the ball
each time there's a fat chance you're going to hit it well and
straight. Most times something will go wrong and you'll lose a shot,
and what's better a shot that went 40 yards shorter but is playable,
or one that's in the woods and you have to take a penalty stroke for.
